Are You Wearing Headphones While Walking?

If so you may want to take them off and listen to the results of a new study.  According to CNN a report published in Injury Prevention, the number of serious injuries and deaths occurring to pedestrians who were walking with headphones has tripled in seven years in the U.S.

Daily Mail reports that Andrew Howard, a top road safety official, said: ” Pedestrians and cyclists seem to get lost in a private cocoon when they’re on a mobile phone in the street, or wearing headphones.

According to the New York Times lawmakers are so concerned with these findings that states, including New York, have legislation pending that would ban the use of mobile phones, iPods or other electronic devices while crossing streets — runners and other exercisers included.

I won’t debate the necessity of the law, but I will advise everyone to keep your head up and look, listen & wait before you cross the street.  Be wise and be safe!

FYI – according to the Department of Transportation in New York State if you’re riding a bike or driving a car  – You are Not to wear more than one earphone attached to an audio device (e.g. radio, ipod, walkman) – It’s the law.
